Does anyone else remember feeling searing dread before your childhood teeth cleaning? If you were anything like me, you’ve spent the past few hours flossing until your teeth bleed, brushing too hard, and wiping on mouthwash like your life depended on it. For many of us, oral health always looks more like a chore than a sacred ritual of self-care. That’s why Tend, a patient-focused dental company, is on a mission to marry oral health and personal care, both inside and outside the dentist’s office.

Tend just launched its “milder” answer to mouthwash: an alcohol-free Mouth Tonic ($28). After observing that alcohol-based washes caused their patients to experience advanced wear (yikes), Tend set out to create a minty yet gentle and hardworking formula designed by dentists and hygienists. By replacing alcohol with xylitol or birch sugar, an ingredient known to fight tooth decay and gum disease, as well as banish bacteria that cause bad breath, Tend has created a one-of-a-kind formula that leaves your mouth feeling fresh. .. but not blanched.

There’s another twist: rather than sending its breakthrough formula down an endless parade of plastic bottles, Tend is determined to lessen its environmental footprint with perfume-shaped mouth tonic bottles that look great on your counter and wnot end up in a landfill. When you order your tonic you will find one of these beautiful glass carafes with a small bottle of concentrate. Simply pour the small bottle into the large bottle, add water and shake. Swish for 30 seconds and – bada-bing! – you have a clean mouth, fresh breath and peace of mind. And when you’re ready for a refill, just purchase a Concentrate Refill ($8). That’s all.

While the mouthwash is truly one of a kind, perhaps the best part about Tend is its holistic approach to dental health. According to current medical research, dental anxiety affects 36% of the population, with an additional 12% experiencing “extreme” dental fear. Obviously, we all need a way to feel more confident about our dental routine as a whole, so that when we walk into the dentist’s office, we do so with at least one minimum of confidence. Tend now offers a complete system to help you do just that. The company also just launched an anti-cavity toothpaste ($12) to complete a whole oral care routine started with toothpicks, tongue scrapers, electric toothbrushes, etc. Together, Tend’s line feels like an invitation to see your dental routine in the same light as, say, your skincare or makeup routine. That is, like a moment every day that’s just for you.

After about a week of using my own team of Tend products, I notice something amazing: I can’t wait to brush my teeth. After a few tongue scrapes and a gentle cleanse with the brand’s Soothsonic toothbrush, I swallow some mouthwash and walk around my bathroom. The flavor is minty, but not overpowering. It looks more like a peppermint patty than a wintergreen mint. Now I have a new routine. The mouth tonic is so refreshing that I decide to swirl it mid-afternoon when my brain is in full rebellion and I still have a few hours of work ahead of me. It’s like a little moment for me. And, I have to say: with an oral care range like this, I’m not as apprehensive about my 6 month dental cleaning.
