Successful $1.4M Community Hall Upgrade Funding

Snowy Monaro Regional Council has successfully secured funding under the Building Safer Communities Project (NSW State Government), with $1.4 million awarded to upgrade and renovate community halls in the Snowy Monaro region.

The Council has sought funds to improve the standard of community halls in the area as well as the provision of training programs and safety equipment which will significantly improve our community’s resilience and recovery from past and future disasters.

The Snowy Monaro relies heavily on community support through our s355 committees, who are dedicated to the management and continued availability of these crucial public places. The past 24 months have demonstrated the importance of these facilities as the region grapples with the impact of drought, fires and the ongoing global pandemic.

The Council will undertake building compliance audits on 14 of our public rooms to inform immediate rectification work. This will help us better understand building conditions, improve maintenance, accurately budget ongoing operations, and support room upgrades and grant applications.

This program aims to improve the resilience of communities to current and future emergencies by providing community first aid training and the provision of emergency equipment, including communication packs and access to AEDs.

The program includes:

  • Building assessments across 14 wards: this will clearly identify building issues and provide Council with a detailed report on the issues that will inform ongoing management plans, budget allocations for repairs and maintenance, and fundraising .
  • Provide first aid training to community members associated with the venue.
  • Provide assurance of availability of equipment for use in emergencies and natural disasters.
  • Ensure connectivity during emergencies and natural disasters is available. This project will make it possible to acquire three packs of satellite telephones to be used in the communities of the region in the event of an emergency.
