Some users of the LastPass password manager have received some very alarming news. Their master password – which keeps all other passwords, payment cards, and other sensitive data stores in LastPass safe – had been compromised.

First of all, the good news. As a good password manager application should, LastPass immediately detected suspicious login attempts. They were fairly easy to spot, as the attacker was trying to connect from an unrecognized location.

LastPass blocked the attacker and advised affected users to immediately review their login history. “It is important to note that we have no indication that the accounts were accessed successfully or that the LastPass service was compromised by an unauthorized party,” said Nikolett Bacso-Albaum, Senior Director of LogMeIn Global PR / AR.

LogMeIn has investigated the incident and believes it “relates to fairly common bot activity.” Basco-Albaum appears to refer to credential stuffing attacks, in which a malicious actor uses a cache of credentials collected from other breaches to attempt to log into website accounts or application.

Alarmingly, however, Bleeping Computer has received reports of some of the affected LastPass users that they were using a unique password for their master.

So if these passwords were indeed unique, where did the attacker find them? It is not possible that they were stolen from LastPass in some way, as LastPass does not store or have access to users’ master passwords.

There are a few options. The first is that even though a master password is unique, it does not necessarily mean that it is particularly strong. Another is that malware is involved.

Many strains of malware monitor clipboard activity on infected computers. They monitor copy and paste operations, as it is a common way for users to enter long and complex passwords, crypto wallet addresses, or public and private keys.

One of the suspects was the Redline Stealer malware. Redline targets username and password data stored in several popular web browsers, including Chrome, Edge, and Opera.

Security researcher Bob Diachenko got extended log files linked to Redline Stealer and was able to confirm that the files contained many LastPass Master Passwords. Several users who received warnings from LastPass asked it to verify their email addresses, but it couldn’t find them.

Diachenko believes this could mean Redline Stealer was not the source of the LastPass attacks. This is unfortunate, because the true source would remain unknown.

If you are using LastPass to manage your passwords, you do not need to close your account due to these attacks. However, you might want to make sure your account is locked.

You should protect your account with two-factor authentication if you haven’t already. LastPass has a helpful guide who will guide you through the process.

You can also change your master password – and don’t forget do not save it in your browser’s password manager once the change is made.

LastPass and the security community continue to investigate and this message will be updated when new information is reported.

ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) – Rowan Public Library is ringing in the New Year with updated hours at three of its four branches. As of January 1, 2022, RPL East (Rockwell), RPL South (China Grove), and RPL West (Cleveland) will all operate on the same schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday, Friday. , Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When RPL’s West Branch in Cleveland opened on June 1, its hours were advertised as temporary. Over the next several months, staff at RPL West conducted a survey to solicit community input on the ideal days and hours of operation for the branch.

Based on the responses to this survey, RPL learned that while respondents were happy with the then current opening hours, the community wanted the branch to be open for more days and with more consistent hours. In the end, RPL West will be open 19 extra hours each week, for a total of 57.

“Adding extra days and hours of operation to the West branch will make it easier for customers to access all of the materials and services we provide. This change will allow us to expand our programming options, which will give more clients access to the various programs for all ages… I am happy that we are able to provide more library hours to the community, ”said Lyndsey Maloney , supervisor of RPL West.

“The western branch makes the whole county proud of what it brings to its community, of what it offers in particular to young people in the western half of the county and, above all, of what it represents of the best of Rowan” said RPL Chairman of the Board Gary Freeze, Ph.D. “The long evolution that has brought us to this day is proof of what a dedication to public service and a dedication to public service can do. improvement of the public good. “

RPL’s goal is to improve access for all of its users, and after careful consideration, the RPL administration has determined that the days and times are consistent for RPL East (Rockwell), RPL South (China Grove) and RPL West (Cleveland) would make operations and staffing more efficient system-wide.

RPL’s Board of Directors accepted and on December 1 unanimously approved the updated schedule proposals. “The library board is very excited about the continued expansion of library services during these difficult times,” said Freeze. “We were very satisfied with the adaptations made by the RPL system to provide as many services as possible to as many people as possible. “

In order to better meet the needs of the Salisbury community, the hours of operation of the head office of RPL (Salisbury) are not changing; the schedule for this branch remains Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The four RPL branches will be closed on December 31 and January 1 for holidays and will reopen at 9 a.m. on Monday, January 3. The updated schedules will then be in effect at RPL East, RPL South and RPL West. For more information on RPL, visit www.rowanpubliclibrary.org or call 980-432-8670.

Victoria County commissioners plan to reduce the number of polling stations in the county by four. If approved, there would be 27 polling stations in Victoria County.

“Most of the (targeted) places have a very low turnout,” Election Administrator Margetta Hill said at a Commissioners Tribunal meeting on Monday when she presented her recommendation.

Victoria County has a countywide vote, which means anyone can vote at a polling station throughout the election period. The majority of voters now vote at the Dr. Pattie Dodson Public Health Center, Hill said. In the November 2021 election, 991 voters cast ballots at the health center, while the location with the second highest number of ballots cast saw just 287 voters.

Voting day turnout for Victoria County polling stations

The table below shows the number of people who voted in each of the polling stations considered for regrouping in the regional elections of 2020 and 2021.

Polling place march 2020 july 2020 november 2020 May 2021 July 2021 November 2021
1 – Hopkins Elementary School 97 40 94 18 14 62
2 – Victoria County Courthouse 237 98 154 39 17 146

35 – FW Gross Primary School 27 14 29 6 6 12
36 – Patty Dodson Health Center 1,278 635 939 495 357 991

Hill recommended combining constituencies 6 and 31, 10 and 30, 2 and 35, and 1 and 34. Some of the locations had as few as six people voting in the 2021 election.

“We looked at this because finding poll workers is sometimes a challenge,” Hill said. “We figured that if we combined some of the ridings that few people went to, we could get more qualified election officials in the ones that are open.”

Victoria County Republican and Democratic Party Chairs said the proposed changes were not too much of a concern to them.

“We have so many places to vote, and we have a countywide vote,” said Bill Pozzi, chairman of the Victoria County Republican Party. As long as the changes are within the city limits, which all of the proposed changes are, he said he supports the change. “You can’t consolidate Bloomington, any of these outliers, because people depend on it and they have to drive far enough.”

“In my quick review of this, I don’t see a problem with what (Hill) is proposing,” said Democratic Party Chairman Woodrow Wagner, who said he trusted Hill to be transparent and make recommendations. based on evidence and logic.

“Anything that potentially deprives voters of the right to vote, then that should merit careful consideration, analysis, but I see no potential deprivation of voters’ right to vote in this area,” he said.

Closing the polling stations could also save the county money, Hill said. It takes at least three to four election officers to run a site, which costs around $ 500 per day, she said.

Hill initially asked commissioners to consider the matter at the next Commissioners Tribunal meeting on Monday, so the new polling stations can be finalized when she sends voters their new voter registration cards in January.

However, the commissioners will not consider the matter on Monday. While supporting the change, Victoria County Judge Ben Zeller said he believed it was important not to rush the process.

“It’s something that I think the county will do a bit later, but not now,” Zeller said. He said he was not comfortable following up on the proposal at such a short time.

“I would like this to be done with a lot more notice,” he said. “Especially given the attention paid to elections and voting these days, any kind of change like this needs to be made with sufficient notice, careful discussion.” “

Social media and search engine operators in Japan will be required to specify the countries in which user data is physically stored, as part of a planned adjustment to local laws.

The Interior and Communications Ministry announced this week that it plans to submit the revised Telecommunications Business Law early next year.

The amendment, if passed, requires search engines, social media operators and mobile phone companies with over 10 million Japanese users to disclose where in the world they store data and identify all foreign subcontractors who can access the data.

The proposed law applies to foreign companies operating in Japan, which means Twitter and Facebook will have to publicly disclose their storage choices. Oddly enough, search engines that only cover travel and food get a pass and don’t have to comply.

Concerns of opponents of the law Express Tuesday include how far the measures will expand, and that they may be too broad and ambiguous. Business operators wondered whether they would face difficult-to-predict management costs and technical limitations in information management.

“There is a risk that the costs will be passed on to users in the form of lower service levels and price increases, causing social inefficiencies,” said a response to the ministry’s hearing with telecom operators.

The move is in part a reaction to Japan’s wildly popular free instant communication app, LINE, which has had several recent issues with data storage and protection.

In March of last year, it was revealed that some of LINE’s data had been routed to China, prompting Japanese government officials to stop using the app. Previously, LINE was used for communications for many regional governments. Like a Reg reader underline, the ban did not last long, and the use of LINE was reinstated by some regional government departments.

A few months later, 100 local politicians and their LINE communications were extracted when a cyber attack successfully disabled the encryption features.

And just a few weeks ago, it was reported that 133,000 LINEpay user data had been uploaded to the unlikely location of GitHub when a research group employee allegedly performed a random oopsy.

With these incidents in mind, the government’s legislative move looks less like a knee-jerk reaction and more like a justified preventive action against future data snafus – especially as different countries use different storage standards and laws.

A company that violates the amendment proposed by Japan could face business improvement orders and more. In addition to the change in the law on telecommunications companies, companies will have to comply with the Japanese law on the protection of personal information from April 2022. ®

New data tracks polling station locations for 37 states

Center for Public Integrity Releases Data Set of Polling Locations Used in the 2020 General Election to Help Journalists and Researchers Analyze Access to the Ballot Box and the Potential Effects of a Series of Changes to Election Laws States.

Data extends an earlier version of the Center for Public Integrity and Stateline Last year which included polling locations and addresses for 30 states for the 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018 general elections.

The new version of the data, available via Github, includes voting locations and addresses for the 2020 general election in 37 states. This new data set, along with data from previous elections, can be used to study Changes made by state and local election officials in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and a series of new laws overhauling access to ballots across the country. The Center for Public Integrity will continue to update this dataset with information from other states over the coming months.

Data from the previous version of Stateline and the Center for Public Integrity was collected as part of a survey project, Obstacles at the ballot box, which examined the impact of the movement and closure of polling stations in states, including Louisiana and North Carolina. The project was a finalist for the 2021 Toner Award for Excellence in National Political Reporting.

No public national dataset on polling station locations used in previous elections previously existed. Polling station locations are controlled locally, so data collation, both for 2020 and prior years, required submitting more than 1,000 requests for public records to states and counties.

“The challenge with this data has always been that in order to do anything systematic, you have to compile the data from many different sources,” said Nick Eubank, research assistant professor at the Duke Social Science Research Institute who studied the effects of the polling place. changes in political participation.

Eubank is now working with students on a project using the data to study access to polling stations on college campuses, and said having the data in one place “is just an incredibly valuable resource.”

Last year’s pandemic forced seismic changes in the way Americans voted. Journalists, researchers and voting rights advocates continue to use polling station location data to determine which voters have been affected by the closure, movement and change of polling stations.

In addition to the Center for Public Integrity and Stateline, the data has been used in reports by news organizations including The New York Times, the the Wall Street newspaper, NPR and Iowa Public Radio and Wisconsin watch. Reports resulting from the data were cited in testimony in congressional hearings and in reports from nonprofit groups that advocate for access to the vote, including the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law, the Voting rights laboratory and the Stanford-MIT Healthy Elections Project.

The nonprofit Center for New Data used polling station locations, as well as smartphone location data, to To analyse voter wait times in Georgia and the potential effects of changes there.

The Center for Public Integrity and Georgia Public Broadcasting used this data earlier this year to report on how proposed changes to electoral laws would affect communities of color.

“Being able to understand exactly where they are and how they are being moved is just as, if not more, important than just knowing the total number in a given jurisdiction,” said Kevin Morris, researcher for the Brennan Center for Justice at La New York University Law School is currently using the data to examine the effect of locating polling stations in police stations. The data “helps reveal that there are real costs voters face in getting to their polling stations.”

This is something that civil rights and voting rights advocates have long worried about. In a 2013 decision, Shelby County v. Holder, the United States Supreme Court struck down a key piece of the Voting Rights Act, eliminating the requirement that places with a history of racial discrimination in voting seek Department of Justice approval before d ” make changes to voting procedures, including voting locations.

Since then, the courts have closed thousands of polling stations. But the reasons for the changes vary widely, with some places increasing their use of regional polling centers compared to neighborhood polling stations and increasing the use of postal voting.

Every polling station closure is not necessarily bad, but it is important to consider the rationale for the closure and the effect of rapidly changing state laws that may limit access to alternatives such as postal vote, said Jesselyn McCurdy, executive vice president of the government. business for the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, a coalition of over 200 civil rights groups. In 2019, the group published a report draw attention to the declining number of in-person polling stations in jurisdictions previously covered by the Voting Rights Act’s requirement to seek federal approval for changes.

“Have they now changed the law where it is more difficult to vote by mail, and they are closing the polling stations?” ” she asked.
